Hello everbody:)
well as u can see, my blog's currently going through some major changes. well for one i would kindly appreciate comments about it.
CC they call it. constructive criticism.
anyways,
as u can see on the big picture up there, there's a weird looking picture of the Earth and some weird machines around it. u must be wondering
"what the hell is that?"
well ladies and gentleman, it is the future. the future of mankind. the future of space exploration! for those who don't know what it is, yes it is in fact a SPACE ELEVATOR.
what's a space elevator?
Think of a common elevator. one which u go into every other day to move up and down a building with the push of a button. now supersize the whole elevator shaft and think of one that brings u UP directly into outer space!
yes my dear friends, it's not crazy. in fact this idea has been around for some time already. The year was 1895, when Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, proposed a compression structure, (that is, a free-standing tower), or "Tsiolkovsky tower" reaching from the surface of the earth, to outer space!
Here's a rough diagram to give u an impression of it.

Space elevators have also sometimes been referred to as beanstalks, space bridges, space lifts, space ladders, skyhooks, orbital towers, or orbital elevators.
however, as of right now, in the year 2008, technology is not capable of manufacturing practical engineering materials that are sufficiently strong and light to build an Earth based space elevator. This is because the total mass of conventional materials needed to construct such a structure would be far too great.
BUT, if the idea suceeds, IF it suceeds, imagine this. materials can be sent directly to outer space for repair works of satelites and etc. imagine the amount of rocket fuel SAVED as humans no longer need to launch rockets into outer space for silly missions. (like seeing if a seed can germinate in space. AND sending a malaysian for a ten-day-holiday in ISS.) Besides, we could even build a space station at the end of the elevator where we can live in. where we are free from all the cruelty and pollution of the Earth.
The idea's absurd?
maybe not:)
zhenfeng. signing off.
